"Through the generosity of the Family Law Partners scholarship scheme, I hope to gain a well rounded understanding of the legal profession. The scholarship offers the opportunity to gain experience in both the legal and operations team, which I believe will give me valuable insights into the inner workings of a modern law firm. I am particularly excited to learn from experienced professionals and to see the application of law in real world, emotionally complex situations. The chance to network with professionals who share similar values will allow me to build relationships and gain invaluable advice. Additionally, the scholarship will allow me to develop practical skills and gain clarity on my future career path. I hope the experience will help shape me into a compassionate lawyer driven to make a difference in people’s lives."
I grew up Chippenham, a small market town in the South West of England. Chippenham is surrounded by open fields and bridleways, an ideal setting for someone who’s always loved horses. Much of my time growing up was spent outdoors, horse riding, and enjoying the landscape. Being also only a stones throw from vibrant cities like Bath and Bristol, I had the best of both worlds. Much of my family are still in Chippenham, so no matter where life leads me, it’ll always be a place I call home.
After visiting Brighton, I knew it would be the perfect place to study. The city is home to a lively beach, a vibrant culture and a rich history. With its wealth of places to explore and activities to enjoy, I’m confident I’ll still be discovering new spots long after I graduate. Additionally, I was drawn to the University of Brighton’s emphasis on practical, real-world knowledge and development of transferable skills which I believe will enhance my confidence and employability. I hope the city’s creative energy will inspire me and shape my personal growth throughout my time in Brighton.
During my gap year, I worked as a carer where I realised my passion for helping people. I saw first-hand how legal and financial issues impact vulnerable individuals and the barriers they face without the knowledge or resources to advocate for themselves. The more I researched about the legal field, the more I realised how far reaching the law is in every aspect of our lives. It allowed me to realise how essential legal support is in creating fairer outcomes and protecting people’s rights. I was fascinated by the power of the law, solidifying my decision to study it and become part of a field with such meaningful impact.
I am particularly passionate about the need to bridge the gap in access to justice, specifically for those who are unable to afford it. While I am still exploring which area of law I’d like to specialise in, I am confident that my time at university will give me the information and experience needed to help me find the path which best aligns to my personal values and aspirations. I also see the Family Law Partners scholarship as a valuable opportunity to gain exposure to the legal profession, which will help me make informed decisions about whether I would like to qualify as a solicitor or train to become a barrister.
I have always enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially riding horses which has been a passion of mine my whole life. Exploring new places and going for walks is something I really value. I’m also very sporty and love staying active whether it’s going to the gym or practicing yoga. Additionally, I am part of the university netball team which helps me stay fit whilst spending time with friends.
